WASHINGTON, June 23 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is a statement of Andrew L.
Stern, SEIU President, on the arrests in Vieques, Puerto Rico:

Service Employees International Union (SEIU, AFL-CIO), representing more
than 1.4 million workers in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, declares its
solidarity with Brothers Jose M. "Lole" Rodriguez, Roberto Pagan and other
Puertorican labor and community leaders arrested in Vieques, Puerto Rico, in
a civil disobedience demonstration against U.S. Navy maneuvers there.

Rodriguez and Pagan preside over two labor organizations affiliated with
SEIU, Union Nacional de Trabajadores de la Salud and Sindicato
Puertorriqueno de Trabajadores. Rodriguez is a member of the executive
committee of this international union.

Our last convention, held in Pittsburgh, Pa., last month denounced
ecological and health damages produced by the U.S. Navy in Vieques. It asked
for the immediate end of all naval and military operations there, and for an
Executive Order from President Bill Clinton to accomplish it.

On behalf of millions of United States, Canadian and Puertorican workers, we
demand immediate justice in Vieques.
