COMUNICADO DE PRENSA
La lucha del pueblo de Vieques recibió un importante mensaje de apoyo del
Dalai Lama, líder espiritual del mundo budista. Gestiones de Héctor
Rosario, estudiante graduado puertorriqueño en New Hampshire y seguidor
del Dalai Lama, en coordinación con el Comité Pro Rescate y Desarrollo de
Vieques (CPRDV), lograron el siguiente mensaje que llegó vía facsimil
desde Napal a las 5:00 de la madrugada del lunes:
"Me preocupa los terribles efectos sobre las personas, los animales y las
plantas en Vieques que tiene los ejercicios militares en la isla. Me
informan que la contaminación que resulta de las prácticas de la Marina ha
causado un nivel de cáncer en Vieques mucho mayor que en la Isla Grande de
Puerto Rico. Por eso, apoyo al pueblo de Vieques en su protesta contra los
ejercicios militares."
Firmada por el Dalai Lama y fechada 8 de mayo del 2000.
Este importante mensaje de solidaridad del líder máximo de los budistas se
suma a una larga lista de lideres religosos de todas las tendencias
espirituales que han expresado su apoyo a la lucha por la paz de Vieques y
las acciones de todos los puertorriqueños que bucan el fin de la presencia
militar en la Isla Nena.

Press Release
The struggle of the people of Vieques received an important message of
support from the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Buddhism. The message
came in response to a petition for support from Hector Rosario, a Puerto
Rican graduate student at Dartmouth in New Hampshire in coordination with
the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques. The text of the
short message reads as follows:

H.H. the Dalai Lama
MESSAGE
I am concerned by the terrible effects on people, animals and plants of
Vieques, an island in the archipelago of Puerto Rico, as a result of the
military exercises conducted on the island. I am told that because of the
pollution from these military exercises the cancer rate in Vieques is much
higher than on the main island. I therefore support the action of the
people of Vieques in protesting against such military exercises.

This important message of solidarity from the maximum leader of the
Buddhist world, adds to a long list of religious leaders representing all
the spiritual tendencies that have expressed support for the struggle for
peace on Vieques and for the action of all Puerto Ricans to end the
military presence on the Island of Vieques.
